MOVING FROM THE U.S. TO CANADA

Understand what your move means for your U.S. assets.

We offer tax consultations for individuals and families moving from the United States to Canada. We help you assess when Canadian tax residency may begin and how your U.S. assets could be treated for Canadian tax purposes once you become a resident.

Your consultation can cover U.S. investment accounts, real estate, IRAs, 401(k) plans, Roth IRAs, and interests in U.S. businesses, LLCs, or trusts. We review the potential Canadian treatment of income, withdrawals, and future sales, along with relevant treaty provisions, foreign tax credits, and reporting requirements.

We also help identify arrival-date valuation records to retain, differences between Canadian and U.S. tax treatment, and any elections or planning steps to consider before your move. The advice is tailored to your assets, citizenship or immigration status, and planned move date.

We will confirm the records needed after discussing your situation. These may include prior U.S. and Canadian returns, income slips, investment statements, residency and travel details, and foreign account information where relevant.

Questions about this service.

Does living in Canada end my U.S. filing obligations?

Not necessarily. U.S. citizens generally remain subject to U.S. tax rules on worldwide income while abroad. Whether a return is required depends on your circumstances.

Do you work with Americans living in the United States?

Yes. Our U.S. return preparation services are available to Americans living in either Canada or the United States.

Can you prepare a 1040-NR?

Yes. We prepare Form 1040-NR for non-residents with U.S. filing requirements. We review your circumstances before confirming the appropriate return.

Is FBAR preparation included?

Your quote will state whether FBAR preparation is included and identify any other reporting forms priced separately.

What if I have missed several years?

We can review your history and assess whether the IRS Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures may be appropriate. Eligibility depends on the facts; relief is not automatic.
